Gordon kirby biography

"There's a lot of junk out there today. If you want it straight, read Kirby." So told the late Paul Newman about one of the world’s most experienced and accomplished racing writers. Kirby has covered more than 1,000 events over the past 45 years for magazines and newspapers around the world, including Road & Track, Car and Driver, Autoweek, Racer and Autosprint. Kirby was Autosport’s American correspondent from 1973-2005, Motor Sport’s U.S. editor from 2010-2017, and founding editor-at-large of OnTrack, Indy Car Racing and Racer. The hallmark of Kirby’s work has been access, based on trust and credibility. Even people like Newman, who steered clear of journalists, talked to Kirby. Among his 15 books are Mario Andretti: A Driving Passion, winner of the 2002 Motor Press Guild Dean Batchelor Award and the 2002 Independent Publishers Book Award. He also won the Miller Award of Excellence for the best motorsports magazine story of 2004. Today, Kirby is a staff writer for Joe Freeman’s Racemaker Press in Boston, focusing on books about the history of American automobile racing.

Gordon Kirby's Book List
- Chris Pook & the History of the Long Beach GP
Racemaker Press, April 2020 - Rick Mears--Thanks
CMG Publishing, 2008
I'm delighted to report that my latest book, 'Rick Mears--Thanks, the story of Rick Mears & the Mears Gang' will debut this week at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Rick and I will sign books at the Speedway this Wednesday, May 21, at 3 pm on 'The Plaza', just behind victory lane. Rick will also join me on Saturday, May 24, for a signing at the Borders on Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis from 1.30-2.30 pm.
Through the nineteen-eighties and into the early nineties Rick was known as the 'King of the Speedways' and the maestro of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Mears won four Indianapolis 500s and three championships between 1979-1991 before retiring at the end of 1992 following a series of injuries that combined to reduce his ability to operate at the maximum and to enjoy his sport to the best. Mears is one of very few great sportsmen who retired at the height of his career in the immediate aftermath of some of his greatest performances. - Bobby Rahal: The Graceful Champion
