Cutting Victor Cruz and Rashad Jennings saves Giants $10 million
This is the dirty side of the business. Wide receiver Victor Cruz and running back Rashad Jennings were two of the most popular and respected individuals in the New York Giants locker room. They were universally liked and respected.
They were also big names with even bigger salaries than their recent production warranted. In the NFL, that usually indicates a tenuous status on the team and roster. It proved to be the case here as well, as both were released Monday.
Cruz, 30, caught 39 passes for yards and one touchdown this past season. Jennings, 31, averaged yards per carry as the Giants’ starting running back. They found out again Monday that football isn’t a popularity or good-guy contest. It is a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately business.
The Giants saved a total of $10 million against the salary cap and in real money with the two moves. The breakdown:
WR Victor Cruz:
salary-cap number: $ million
base salary: $ million
Roster bonus (due March 11): $1 million
Workout bonus: $K
Dead money: $ million
TOTALS:
Salary-cap savings: $ million
Real-money savings: $ million
RB Rashad Jennings:
salary-cap number: $3,,
base salary: $ million
Workout bonus: $20K
• • The Giants on Monday will release Victor Cruz, their rags-to-riches receiver from Paterson, NJ, who helped them win a Super Bowl five years ago. Cruz, 30, has spent his entire seven-year NFL career with the Giants, arriving as an undrafted and largely unknown player from UMass. He leaves as one of the most popular players in franchise history, his salsa dance after touchdowns and fans saluting him with chants of “Cruuuuuuzz’’ whenever he made a catch an essential part of the fabric of recent years. Cruz hoped the Giants would be willing to re-work his contract, and he was ready to accept a hefty cut in pay. No such offer was made by the Giants. He was scheduled to make $ million in salary and bonuses in and count $ million on the salary cap, numbers Cruz knew were not commensurate with his production: 39 receptions for yards and only one touchdown in 15 games. He hoped the Giants would be amenable to keeping him on the roster for a reduced salary. He was able to stay healthy this past season after missing a combined 26 games in and due to knee and then calf surgeries. The Giants, though, are moving on. The move saves the Giants $ million on their salary cap. Cruz was due a roster bonus of $1 million on March By releasing h Career Earnings: $28,,
