Ernie Kaufman was the son of Harry B. (Benjamin Harrison) Kauffman and Amanda Miller. He was born January 4, 1911. His family lived on Rt. 956 near the church, and Ernie attended Phillips School. The Kauffmans were members of the Maple Grove Mennonite Church in Wilmington Township, Lawrence County, PA (note: Ernie’s parents spelled their last name Kauffman, but he changed the spelling to Kaufman because of a bank error). Florence was also a member of Maple Grove. She was the daughter of Menno and Fannie Kurtz Hartzler. The Hartzlers lived in Fayette and Florence attended the Fayette School. She remembers looking up to Harry and Amanda at church and admiring their family as she grew up. On November 30, 1933 Ernie and Florence were married. They said their vows at the church parsonage after the Thanksgiving Service, with Ernie’s brother Merle and Florence’s sister Vanora standing as witnesses.
Their married life began while living on the farms that are now commonly known as the Frank Kauffman farm and the Reynolds farm, all in the vicinity of 956 and Old Mercer Road in Wilmington Township. Ernie supported the family with the money he earned as a dai
