  • The Background of the Battle of Tanagra and Some Related Issues

    In 458 or 457, as if awakened from a long sleep, the Spartans decided to take up arms outside their borders. The Phocians had attacked Doris in central Greece and the Spartans came to its rescue with 1,500 of their own men and 10,000 Peloponnesians1. The Spartans' action is something of a puzzle. It followed a period of inactivity during which j the Spartans had not helped their major allies, the Corinthians, with their

    I war against Athens, and when the Athenians placed Aegina under siege,

    f the Peloponnesians sent only 300 hoplites to the island (THUCYDIDES, I,

    105-106; DIODORUS of SICILY, XI, 78-79). In comparison with Corinth or Aegina, Doris was of negligible strategic or military significance. Why then did the Spartans decide to help Doris and not their more important allies, and why did they mobilize such a large force against the | relatively minor power of Phocis?

    | These are not new questions, but the answers given them are not

    j entirely satisfactory. The purpose of this paper is to offer a reassessment

    j of the Spartans' reasons for going on an expedition to central Greece, as

    { well as to consider some related issues which figure in the background
