Double amputee and 'Dancing' star Amy Purdy living life of adventure - just as planned
GRAND RAPIDS, MI – After Amy Purdy had both legs amputated at 19, she had no idea how she would ever walk again – she just knew she would make it happen.
Now a Paralympian and a veteran of “Dancing with the Stars,” she is thrilled to see her story inspires others, she said at the gala for Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital.
“I didn’t have anybody like that when I lost my legs,” she said. “I wish I had that example just to know it’s going to be OK. And not just OK – it can be outstanding.”
Purdy, the keynote speaker at the event Wednesday, Nov. 5, said she loved snowboarding as a teen.
“That’s all I wanted to do,” she said. “I wanted to live a life of adventure and snowboarding and take it as far as I could.”
While ill with meningitis, she lost both legs. She didn’t know what to expect next – she had never even seen a prosthetic leg.
“My doctor said ‘we don’t even know if you will walk without a cane again,’” she said. “But I did know I had the drive. I had the passion. And because of that, I thought, I will find a way, one way or another.”
She became a world champion in adaptive snowboarding.
